NEAR SPACE BALLOONING - STRATOSPHERIC PHOTOGRAPHY

LAUNCH 5 : MICHIGAN

Launch 5 included four still cameras and one video camera. Added to the mix was a Pentax k-01, a relatively lightweight (compared to most DSLRs), mirrorless, interchangable lens camera (MILC), which contains a large sensor, long lasting battery, and built-in intervalometer. It was fitted with a 28mm SMC manual focus lens. However, despite lasting hours during testing, for reasons unknown the camera stopped shooting properly sixty-five minutes into the flight. Consulting with various Pentax users, it sounds as though the sensor either formed condensation on it, or the cold had some kind of adverse affect on the electronics. The Canon Powershot G12 took only two photos. When setting it facing downwards in the payload box, a button must have accidently been depressed, which halted CHDK. Originally, several Canon Powershot IS4000s had been prepared, but CHDK did not seem to function well on them as it is only in Alpha mode for that model. In place, the standby IS3300s were used.
